LeBron to the Minnesota Timberwolves? I’m putting a bold prediction on the record and I want you to tell me if I’m seeing the future or just talking myself into it. We run through Minnesota sports offseason storylines, quick hitters on teams like the Twins and the Minnesota Lynx, and the kind of unfiltered fan logic that only shows up when the games are still weeks away.

Then we shift to real life, because that’s the whole Rough Bunker point. I talk golf with the boys, a moment of grief that hit harder than expected, and why I’m genuinely grateful for the support system at home. If you’re living the coach dad schedule, you’ll recognize the constant switching between “practice mode” and “just be present” mode, especially when your kids are figuring out which sport they actually love.

From there it’s hot takes and debate fuel: why I’d rather watch the WNBA than the NBA, how Caitlin Clark is changing the league’s future, and why NBA load management is brutal for fans who pay to see stars play. I also get into college football pressure teams and the transfer portal problem, including why college sports needs clearer rules and real leadership.

We close with a ChatGPT powered list of the most overrated sports movies, and yes, it’s going to rattle cages. Hit play, then subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a five-star review so more Coach Dad fans can find the show.

Last Week Recap And What’s Ahead

SPEAKER_00

back to the Rough Bunker Sports Podcast. I'm your host, Tony Antony. Thank you for listening in advance. Got a pretty good show here for you guys. I want to just recap last week's show. I know we talked about LeBron James coming to the Timberwolves. Still hoping that that's an option, obviously. We might dive into a little bit of that. Talked about how it's okay to not be okay. So, I mean, there's a lot of things that last week's episode touched on. Uh, this week we're gonna get some hot takes going on here. We're gonna talk about some off-season stuff uh with Timberwolves and Vikings. We'll talk about some other big things going on. I know with the uh off seasons going on right now, it's definitely not peak sports season. There's obviously baseball, the World Cup, WMBA, things like that going on. So I'm I might touch on a few things there. Just definitely moving along, uh, talking about things that I like to talk about, uh, hopefully you like to listen. Uh so you know, we'll get into the show today. Some of the biggest headlines, obviously, LeBron to the Timberwolves as a possibility is a big headline. Twins are rolling right now, which is nice to see the Minnesota Lynx female women's professional basketball team. They're having one of the best seasons in organizational history. So that's pretty cool with Olivia Miles, with not even if you see call you're playing at all. We've got some decent hot takes this week. I got a top 10 list that is definitely a little controversial. I know that a couple of my friends or listeners definitely are gonna have some opinions on it, you could say. And then we'll have a dad moment of the week. Maybe I'll go on a little tangent or rant about something in between. Uh, but definitely sit back to have a listen, uh, laugh at me, argue with me in your car or wherever you're listening. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, debates, things like that. Definitely uh shout out on the on the podcast, follow us on Apple, Spotify. I'm gonna I just started getting in like a YouTube channel, posting some shorts and things like that. Something that I've been kind of looking forward to. And definitely check out the merchandise and Shopify. I've got the Bostu Boys stuff, I've got uh Rough Bunker Sports stuff. Some things are in the works. I I'm slowly but surely getting things all set up, kind of just feeling out the interest and feeling out things like that. So let's just get into today's show. It's been a

Golf, Grief, And Gratitude

SPEAKER_00

hot one, obviously, up here in northern Minnesota. We'd have had some pretty hot and humid weather, which is nice considering we had a month of just rain and shit. Uh so it's nice to have some decent hot weather here. Uh, past couple days has been the Hibbing Jubilee. So lots of people in Hibbing for that. My Tony and I went golfing with Nick this week at the Virginia golf course. It was nice. It was in the morning, it was nice out. It got hot towards the end. They had a scramble later that day, so the pins were all over the place, all over the place on the green. Those two shot pretty well. I had some pretty decent shots myself. I I'm getting better slowly but surely. Uh, and I'm not the greatest golfer in the world, but obviously just starting out, it's it's a process. It's definitely something that I'm trying to get better at, but definitely not as good as I would like to be at the moment, obviously. But it it's it's a good time. I I like getting out there and hanging out with the friends and hanging out with the boys and hitting hitting the golf ball around, uh, whether whether I hit it straight or slice like I normally do. But, you know, it's it's about getting out there and hanging out. And like we went yesterday, Saturday, July 11th. So had a moment on the on the golf course. It was a year since my my aunt's obituary was put out. So I I had a moment on the golf course kind of reflecting on that and thinking of her and thinking of the family and my uncle and my kids and my wife and everything that we've gone through the last few years to be able to get out there with with two of my best friends and kind of get away and do the things that I enjoy doing with my friends. I'm pretty fortunate to have a wife that allows me, or I shouldn't say allows me, that is okay with me getting out there with my friends and playing golf and kind of processing things the way I process things. I don't I don't admit to processing everything the correct way or the healthiest way, but I I think getting out there on the golf course with, like I said, two of my best friends really helps in that kind of situation and that kind of headspace. So I just a shout out to my wife. She's she's amazing. She's the rock that's holding the whole family together and in times of crisis or need or anything like that. She's she's amazing. She's definitely filled that role and filled that void of my mom and my aunt uh not being around anymore, unfortunately. So she works really hard. She busts her ass at her full-time job, and you know, then she busts her ass when she gets home, whether that be with me or the kids or my uncle or whoever, she's she's the bet she's the best. I I I I can't I can't really say anything else about it. Like she's she's amazing. So yeah, we definitely did that, and then we walked in the parade. Myself, well, we walked in the parade for my wife for her job. My kids, my whole, my whole family walked in the parade. And it was hot, and we were bitching and complaining, and you know, all that kind of fun stuff. But uh, we were there for her. We were there to support her and what she does for all of us and how she supports all of us. We need to support her too. And I was very proud of my kids coming out and helping and doing the the best that they can and you know supporting their mom, supporting their mom, stepmom, whatever you want to say. It was good, it was hot, it was hot, man. Walking in the heat and that parade. That parade's a definitely a long one. The hibbing parade's a long one. You walk quite a quite a long way. But we made it through and it was fun. And then we went to the to the street dance afterwards, after we came home, cleaned up and went back over there and hung out with friends and had a good time. And it was good. It was a good night, it was a good good day. And then this next upcoming week, we've got, or I've got myself and my two oldest daughters have basketball practice early in the morning, getting ready for some summer tournaments, and it yeah, it things are going around and you know, life's happening and all that kind of stuff. So that's kind of an update on what's going on with me and the family. And I know that the sauna business is kind of kicking here, and Tony's got rentals coming out of his ears, and that's good, and moving along with that, and everything's everything's moving along. If you're

Sauna Rentals And What We’re Building

SPEAKER_00

looking, like I said, you know, if you're looking for a sauna rental, definitely give myself or Tony a call or text or whatever you want to do, email if you're like you want to do that, reach out to us on the website, boss2barrelsco.com. Uh, you can set up everything there. Uh, you can look and see if you are look wanting a custom-made sauna. So that that's all set up for there too, which is which is good. So we'll jump into the show here with our opening drive.

NFL Offseason Buzz And Cowboys Rant

SPEAKER_00

Some of the NFL off season off-season storylines and training camp buzz. A lot of it's based around obviously the Vikings getting Kyler Murray and all that kind of stuff. I've talked about that before. One of the other biggest talks and headlines is Miles Garrett to the Rams. He's going to make them an even more legit contender. Sorry. Uh, he's gonna make them even a more of a contender there. He's legit. Like the land the Rams are are a legit threat for the Super Bowl. I I think that they're my favorite to win the whole thing next year. Stafford coming back, Devontae Adams, Puka, you know, they've got a really good running game, they're obviously very well coached. But if they then have uh Aaron Donald come back, he's only 35, like he's young. He did he pulled a Barry Sanders and retired in the prime of his career, and he didn't want to be a part of a rebuild. And now that the Rams are back to where they are extremely, extremely good, I think he is definitely thinking about coming back and dominating like he did. Even if he's only a like a two or three down option for them on the veteran minimum for one year, it it'd be it'd be phenomenal. That that would put them way ahead of the curve, way ahead of everybody else, and it would definitely increase their already very high Super Bowl and championship aspirations. And if McVeigh has any sort of you know pull with that, I I definitely think that he can get Aaron Donald to come and play. And I I that's that's just how I definitely feel. And then I, you know, I I keep hearing these overhyped terms on the Cowboys. The the fucking Cowboys are not good. They're not. They're the most overhyped team in American sports. More than the Lakers, more than the Yankees, more than anybody else. The the Cowboys are the most overhyped, overrated team talked about. And I know they're in a big market. I know Jerry Jones is Jerry Jones and all that kind of stuff, and he makes headlines so that people talk about the Cowboys. That's what that's what he does, that's what he's good at. So I'm not really gonna spend too much more time on it because I don't give a shit about the Cowboys. I don't like them at all.

NBA Summer League And Wolves Dreams

SPEAKER_00

Uh some of the offs NBA offseason winners and losers. I've been watching a little bit of Summer League, but I I what was brought up to me before by a friend recently, I can't remember which player it was, but they were extremely hyped up at Summer League. And then they really didn't play much and they really didn't do much in the upcoming season. Summer League is full of G-Leaguers. I mean, you you get these rookies that are gonna come in, like Darren Peterson, DeBonsa, some of those other big, you know, top ten names. They are they should come in to Summer League and not necessarily dominate, but definitely succeed and definitely kind of have their way with you know the less the less athletic, the less professional athletes that are that are gonna be there. You know, they're the these are guys that are never gonna get into an NBA game, they're never gonna they're never gonna have that wow moment. You know, you look at some of the guys like the two the Timberwolves have, like Bowens Highland, like he was a good G-League player for a long time and then he finally got his shot. So there are occasions like that. But I mean the NBA does a good job selling selling the summer league stuff, you know. They they put Brawny on a bunch of games last year. They've put in they've put some other you know bigger named, more hyped guys on TV, and then people watch it, you know, and it and that's good. Like that's that's the moneymaker, obviously. So I just you know the offseason's gonna be interesting for the NBA stuff, you know. You hopefully there's no major injuries, you know. Dame is back in Portland, he's got John Morant, you know. How's that gonna go? How are the the Timberwolves gonna go with LaMelo? Paul George and Jalen Brown swap, you know, Jalen going to Philly and Paul George coming to Boston, you know. How are those guys gonna fit in? And is it gonna be better for either group? Obviously, I'm I'm kind of a I wouldn't say homer, but I'm definitely a big fan of the Timberwolves, and they're they're gonna be really good. They're gonna be really good. And I I and I believe if LeBron comes to Minnesota, they should be the favorite to win the NBA championship. Over San Antonio, over OKC, over the Knicks, over Boston. You know, I I think LeBron still has that ability to affect and influence uh teams like that. Like he is he's really good still as a 42-year-old veteran. Like he's still phenomenal. So, I mean, we'll see what happens there.

College Football Pressure And Transfers

SPEAKER_00

And college football is kind of ramping up. You know, you're you're getting teams that are just doing obviously they had spring spring games, and you know, they're gonna have some stuff here in the summer. I think some of the teams with the most pressure are kind of your normal ones that have pressure, like Alabama has pressure, and Michigan's gonna have pressure, Ohio State's gonna have pressure, Oregon's gonna have pressure. I think the Govers should have a little bit of pressure because they have been solid the last few years. I mean, they've been a bowl team for as long as I can remember with PJ Fleck, he's won a bunch of bowl games. And, you know, USC's gonna be under some pressure, UCLA is gonna be under some pressure. Some of these guys that are coming in, the big, the big name recruits and these big transfers, you know, Koy Perrit transferring to Oregon, it's gonna be kind of a big deal. So I I mean, Oregon would be my choice as the team with the most pressure because Dante Moore came back, you know, Koy Perrit went over there. They still have studs at wide receiver, their defense has still got studs everywhere. Ohio State's gonna have a lot of pressure just based on, you know, Julian Sand at quarterback, Jeremiah Smith at wide receiver, you know, Ryan Day is gonna have to get get some wins now. That Michigan's gonna be down, and I mean it's it's gonna be an interesting year for college football. Maybe you'll have another James Madison underdog coming out. Maybe NDSU is gonna have some pressure on them coming into you know Division I finally and having to play some real teams. I shouldn't say real teams, but having to play obviously a Division I schedule, and this is what they wanted. And you know, they've been dominating at the FCS for the last 15 years, and they they should they should do well. I mean, I I don't know, I don't have the expectation that they're gonna compete for a national championship right away, uh, but they definitely have that they have the the blueprint to to build a team, it's just gonna be a matter of recruiting and and getting kids in there through the transfer portal and not losing kids through the transfer portal. So we'll see how NDSU does. It'll be interesting because I I think NDSU could be a sleeper team eventually in that division one area. I I'd love to see them move into the Big Ten eventually. I think that'd be awesome. That's not going to be for a while, a long, long while. So give me some feedback on what you think on that and which team has the most approved this season, whether it be NBA, college football, NFL, baseball, any anything that you got for me, definitely tell me what you think. So

Entertainment Corner Movie And Show Picks

SPEAKER_00

I I kind of have a new a new segment in the show. I'm gonna I'm calling it Entertainment Corner. Kind of just talking about like movies, TV shows, things like that. I I'm I'm a big movie guy. I I love I love movies, I love like sitcoms, things like that, documentaries. I'm pretty heavy into that kind of stuff. So I I just wanted to kind of see what people thought about a new segment called Entertainment Corner. Some of the upcoming movies that I'm excited to eventually see, one being The Odyssey with Matt Damon, uh Christopher Nolan's new movie. It looks cinematically, it looks amazing. And I I do love pretty much anything Christopher Nolan does. He's he's one of my favorite act or actors, directors. He did obviously the Batman trilogy, Inception, this new Odyssey movie. He he's done a couple other ones, and I I really am I am really, really excited for that. Supergirl, I haven't seen yet. I've heard pretty decent things about it with Jason Momoa uh playing Lobo. Another one that's coming up obviously is a live-action Moana. If anybody knows me, I'm a massive Dwayne Johnson fan. He's been an amazing actor for as long as I can remember. I watched Smashing Machine not long ago. That was really, really good with him in it. Anything that he's done, including like the Jumanji movies, he's hilarious. He he's one actor now that can do the comedy, the action, the serious, you know, kind of stuff like that. And I'm really just excited to see what his spin on a live-action Maui is. It's gonna be weird seeing him with all that hair, but it's definitely, definitely, definitely gonna be one of my favorite movies, I think, of the year. I have if you know people know who I people know me. I I have a Hey Hey tattoo that my middle daughter picked out, and I get a bunch of comments on it, and everybody that sees it seems to pretty pretty much love it. I know my wife yells at me all the time because I have some inconsistencies in the in the ink, but uh, in my opinion, it gives it its kind of character and remembrance of the tattoo. Sidebar, the girl that did the tattoo for me down at Ank shout out to Anchor's End in Duluth. She I think it was like her third or fourth tattoo she ever did, and she was actually an apprentice and also a caregiver at a an elderly assisted living home down there, and she was one of the uh PCAs for my grandpa at the time, or right before he passed. So uh shout out to Anchor's end, shout out to live action Moana and everything like that. Kind of another another there's a bunch of movies that I'm sure I'm missing, but those are kind of the two that I'm really, really excited to go see. I I just watched Ready or Not 2 for the first time last night, yesterday, uh, when I had time. Didn't think I was gonna like it, kind of half watch the first little bit of it, but it the first one was really good, so I figured I'd give the second one a shot. I don't know. I like any kind of movie, whether it be believe it or not, musicals, rom coms are good. You know, one of my favorite rom coms is just go with it or blended with Adam Sandler and the one of them's with Drew Barrymore, and the other one's with uh Jennifer Aniston, and they're they're hilarious, they're absolutely hilarious. So, yeah, those are kind of the up upcoming and uh and movies that are out right now that I'm that I'm pretty excited about. Any and streaming shows that I'm that I've been watching and worth that are worth watching. I am a I'm a big Game of Thrones fan, so anything Game of Thrones is definitely a suggestion for me. I liked Dutton Ranch, I thought that was from what I've seen amazingly done, perfectly done. Marshalls was good, the other spinoff of Yellowstone. If anybody hasn't watched the show Jack Ryan on Prime Video, phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. John Krasinski does a fantastic job. Reacher's another one that I really, really liked. Alan Richardson did that one. So I mean, it it there's a lot out there. I'm I'm re-watching Band of Brothers when I have time. One of my other friends, Lane, and I watched that religiously in college. I I don't think I've ever been bored with that show. Every time I watch it, I see something new. It's it's phenomenal, phenomenally done. Another show that I stream that I really like watching, and people think I'm weird, I'm sure, for watching it is Top Chef. I've been watching Top Chef on Bravo forever since it first started. I remember watching the first season. I've watched pretty much every single season since. It's amazing. It's one of my favorite cooking shows, cooking reality shows. And I'm nowhere near the chef or the cook that any of those people on that show are, but it's still pretty cool to watch what people that have such a passion for cooking can do and what they can do with minimal stuff and in minimal time. It's pretty insane, pretty crazy that those people are that talented and that focused and things like that. So that's just some of the stuff that I like to watch, and some stuff that I would obviously suggest to watch. For if you've never watched Friends, it's fantastic. One of the Sitcoms ever made. The Office, one of the best sitcoms ever made. Friday Night Lights, one of my favorite shows. Also, they just had a reunion recently. So I I mean it seems like I have a lot of time on my hands to watch all this stuff, but I I don't. I stay up too late watching this kind of shit and regret it the next day when I'm tired at work. So yeah, those are kind of like I said, those are the things that I would really suggest for shows sitcoms. And I and I love I love documentaries too. Sports documentaries, probably one of my favorite things. Any 30 for 30 is good. Any of them. Any 30 for 30 is amazing. Obviously, Last Dance with the Michael Jordan story. That one was really good. So I mean, there's there's sports documentaries out there that are good. The Pele one's really good. So I just whatever you're kind of into is what I would suggest for kind of documentaries. My my favorite one is the Chris Heron one. Kind of a uh it's a documentary about a guy that was a high school phenom, got into the wrong crowd, the wrong things, started doing some some illicit drugs, made it all the way to his Boston Celtics. Obviously, there's stuff in between, but definitely worth a watch for Chris Heron. Kind of a question that I would have for the audience: which athlete would make the best actor? Now, I know there's athletes out there that have been actors that are good, like Dwayne Johnson, but who do you think would make the best actor? Give me your thoughts, give me your suggestions, let me know in the comments. I'm open to any any suggestion there, and we can we can either debate it, laugh about it, or anything like that. If if and just a side note here, if anybody hasn't seen the big show in his TV sitcom, I suggest watching that also because he's hilarious. So I'm gonna move on to the next one here.

Hot Takes On Hoops And Load Management

SPEAKER_00

It's just our hot take only segment of the show here. Uh I'll then there's a lot of them out there, and I know my friend and I, Nick and I were talking about this at a birthday party on Friday about some stuff. I'm not gonna get it too, I'm not gonna get into that right now, but definitely for my hot take examples this week or hot take segment this week. I'm gonna throw one out there that me personally is truthful. I would rather watch a WNBA game than an NBA game. I would rather watch women's professional basketball than men's professional basketball. And maybe it's because I coached women's basketball or girls' basketball, and I I like the fundamentals of the game, I like the team aspect of the game, I like how it's more of a thinking game because on the men's side, they rely so much on athletic ability and size that you know, look at Wemby. Wemby's seven foot five, and if you're under six feet or six three or under, you can't guard him. I mean, he can bring you outside, he can shoot it over you, he can bring you underneath the basket, he can he should post you up, dunk on your head. Where on the women's side, you know, there there's a lot of stronger women in the league, but you can still put a player on them like a Paige Becker's or a Caitlin Clark or a Sophie Cunningham or someone like that, where they're not gonna overpower you with size, and they can still they can still play defense. Like and it's such a more of a team game where it's more of a team defense and a team offense that you know it's just it's way more entertaining for me to watch for whatever reason. And like I said, maybe it's because I coach women's girls basketball, but I just I I like I like watching women's basketball more than I like watching men's, and it's just more entertaining. Another one that Caitlin Clark will become the biggest athlete in a one of the biggest athletes in America. Now, I already think this is true. I think Caitlin Clark changed the WMBA forever. Her talent, her attitude, her marketability, and all those things. I I just she's she's the face of the league. She is the face of the WMBA. And I don't think many people would argue with me on that. In today's WMBA, it is Caitlin Clark. That league is going to go as far as Caitlin Clark wants to take it. And that's just a fact. I'm sorry. One of my next hot takes here, and I kind of touched on this in the last episode, I believe that the NBA needs fewer the NBA, I don't believe this. The NBA needs fewer regular season games. Now you play 82 games. I I think that's a pretty decent amount. I I think less back-to-backs would be good for the for the NBA. But even still, like load management is what's killing the NBA. Load management is something that is in and this is just my novice, you know, non-professional opinion, that you've got all this medicine and all these new all this new stuff that you can do as athletes, how to take care of your body, whether it be, you know, food or working out, all these other things that athletes 15, 20, 25, 30 years ago didn't have. They didn't have the option to have it. You look at guys that played in them in a more physical league that never took a night off. And now you've got guys that barely go to the basket or barely get knocked down, and they're playing however many games a year. I just don't understand it. Uh load management is just a complete crock of shit, in my opinion. I'm so happy that the NBA put that requirement on for the amount of games that you have to play to be considered for NBA first team, second team, third team, MVP defensive player of the year, all that stuff. It was one of the best things that the NBA could do because you've got guys like Joel Embiid or James Harden, even LeBron. LeBron does it. I mean, granted, he's 42 years old, but you've got guys like the faces of their teams, the faces of the league that are taking, you know, every other night off just because their their toenail hurts or their finger hurts or they don't feel good, or you know, all that other kind of shit. And you've got families that are paying a lot of money to go see them play. If I if I went to a game and LeBron was supposed to play, or Embiid was supposed to play, or one of the bigger names in the league was supposed to play, and they ended up load managing that night, I'd be pissed. I'd be I'd be upset. I mean, I'm not there to watch second team NBA players play, I'm there to watch the stars play. Because you might only get one chance to see LeBron, you might only get one chance to see Anthony Edwards, you might get one chance to see Steph Curry or Clay Thompson or Cooper Flag or Luca or whoever it is. But then, you know, they come to a small market area like Milwaukee or Charlotte or Minnesota or whatever for an away game, and they sit or they play some shit team like Chicago and they don't want to play or risk getting hurt. Like that that sucks. That's bullshit. My kids came to watch you play. I paid good money to come and watch you play. And that I'll give you know respect to the early 2000s, you know, two two 2010s, 90s. Those guys played. Kobe played Hurt, Jordan played Hurt, KG played Hurt, Paul Pierce played Hurt, Ray Allen, Dwayne Wade, Shaq, you know, all those guys that I remember watching growing up, they all played Hurt. Larry Bird played Hurt, Kevin McHale played Hurt, you know, all these guys. Granted, you do see them walk around now, but that's the choice they made. You know, it is sports entertainment, and I understand that they want to be able to play in the playoffs, but that's why I have a hard time getting behind Kawhi Leonard. I really do, because he just he doesn't want to play. If his finger hurts or his toe hurts or his hair hurts, like he he he won't play. And it it's it's also for the fans, like you have to remember that. So that was kind of a big big tangent there. Another hot take that I kind of have this transfer portal stuff in college sports is it's just changed everything. It it has completely changed the landscape of of college athletics. There's a couple people that I know that I've talked or watched that have talked about, you know, restrictions on it. There needs to be some sort of restrictions on it. You you can't you can't just transfer three, four times. Like that's that that just can't happen. I mean, it's tough enough to get a recruit to a school for especially a smaller school, and then they just leave because they feel like leaving or they don't like the coach, or you know, something happened where they don't agree with it, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. There, there needs to be some sort of restrictions on it. And that's just my take. And I I'm wondering if other people agree with me. You just you can't have free agency in college sports. Like it just call me an old call me old-fashioned, call me things like that, but you just you just can't. It's just something that just needs to be more regulated and things like that. They got they gotta have more rules, and I'm sure they will. They they need what they need in in especially college football, college basketball, they they need a commissioner. They they need a a sports commissioner or a or a committee or you know, a board or some something where there's gonna be rules and regulations put on this transfer transfer portal stuff. It should make the blue blood teams better, but has it, honestly? I mean, you you look at what has gone on with Alabama since Sabin left. Nick Sabin saw the writing on the wall. Nick Nick Saban isn't stupid. He saw what the landscape was gonna look like, he saw what everything was gonna look like when you can start paying people and paying everything and the NIL stuff. I mean, obviously, schools were paying kids way before NIL and transfer portal things were happening. So that's a topic for another for another episode. Uh so tell me what you think. Give me your give me your opinions on that. Give me give me what let me let me know what you think. Uh, and this next this next segment's definitely gonna rattle some cages and definitely it's definitely going to bring out some opinions that I don't know if people are gonna agree.

Top 10 Overrated Sports Movies List

SPEAKER_00

So I have a top 10 list. This is I'm gonna move into my top 10 segment. The the subject today, subject today for the top 10 list, the according to chat GPT, the top 10 most overrated sports movies. Now, I know Tony and I did a a bracket on sports movies a while ago. I've talked about my favorite sports movies. First, I'm just gonna give the honorable mentions for for this, and then I'll get into the top 10 lists. So, honorable mentions for most overrated sports movies. Now, I'm gonna tell you right off top, I don't necessarily agree with all of this. So, getting into it, honorable mentions for this list, Draft Day. Draft Day was a Kevin Costner movie where he was the GM of the Browns, had Chadwick Bozeman in it, had Dennis Leary, had Jennifer Garner. So, I mean it had some star power behind it. I like the movie, definitely not one of my favorites. I mean, if it's on, I'll watch it. But I I can I can kind of agree with that as an honorable mention. Uh next one is Days of Thunder, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman. I don't I'm not much for racing movies personally. It was it was it wasn't that great. I I I can agree with that. Blue Chips is another one for the honorable mention, and then Any Given Sunday, any Any Given Sunday was one of my favorite football movies growing up. Jamie Foxx, Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, James Wood, L Cool Jennis Quaid, Bill, I think Bill Bellamy was in that movie, Lawrence Taylor, Jim Brown. So it had a pretty good cast for the movie. So I mean the football aspect of it was okay. The storyline was a little outrageous, but definitely made me a Jamie Lee Fox or Jamie Lee, Jamie Foxx fan. Him playing Steam and Willie Beaman, he's phenomenal at that. I I definitely named a character in a Madden game, Willie Beaman, when you could uh early in those Madden games where you could start a career and all that kind of stuff. Uh I had Steam and Willie Beaman as one of my people. Next one is Invincible, the Vincent Popale Bioptic. I wasn't a huge fan of it. Inspirational, yes, not the best Disney sports biotic. I I mean I I wasn't I didn't really like it. So getting into the top 10 lists, number 10, and um remember this is top ten most overrated movies according to chat GPT. Number 10, 2009 film, The Blind Side. Pretty strong performances, Tim McGraw, Sandra Bullock. I just it definitely just leans heavy on cliches of you know inspirational cliches. It and it came out that it wasn't an entirely accurate from Michael Orr himself. So blindside's at number 10. Number nine, this is definitely gonna rattle some cages of people my age. Space Jam. Obviously, obviously, it's a childhood favorite with Looney Tunes, Michael Jordan, the nostalgia of it. The soundtrack was fun, was pretty good, but it definitely outweighs the actual quality of the movie. Like the movie is not good. It's just not. Michael Jordan obviously is not an actor, very cheesy, which is kind of the it's kind of how the movie was supposed to go. It's just I it it it leans a lot on nostalgia of Michael Jordan and Looney Tunes. Like you put those two behemoths together, people are gonna watch it. People are gonna watch it. Number eight, Rudy. Obviously, a great on it's iconic for an under underdog story, but I know a lot of the critics just it's too it's overly sentimental and dramatized. It just is. It's not the real story of Rudy. It obviously they made it into a movie more more fictional than than anything. I I never really was a big fan of Rudy. I've seen it a couple times, never, never really tickled my fancy. Next one I I kind of I kind of agree, but I did also disagree. One of the most quotable movies ever. It doesn't really hold up as one of the main actors' best comedies, Taladega Nights. Now, obviously, like I said, one of the most quotable movies ever because of Will Farrell, JC Riley. So, I mean, it it's definitely quotable, but the movie itself, meh, it's okay. Number six is the 2005 version of the longest yard. Adam Sandler plays Paul Crue. You've got Nellie, Michael Irvin, Terry Cruz, a whole bunch of WWE, WWF wrestlers, you know, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Rick Nash, or not Rick Nash, whatever Nash was there. I can't remember his first name. It was okay. I mean, it for a football movie, the soundtrack was good. So, I mean, that there's definitely that. Number five is a movie that I've only seen a couple times, The Natural from 1984. Obviously, it's shot beautifully. It's it's a little slow from what I've heard. It's not really that compelling as the reputation of the movie suggested. It's not a movie that I know a lot about. So number, and then moving on to number four, 2005's Coach Carter. Obviously, it's an inspiration message, true story. It is predictable, very predictable. It gives it gave me a lot of what the original, like the Friday Night Lights movie was, where you know the team runs through and then they get to the playoffs and then they lose. Sorry if I ruined it, but that's what happens. It kind of jumped off some careers. A guy that plays Worm, he was also in what the hell is that show called? One Tree Hill. The guy that plays Worm in the Coach Carter movies from One Tree Hill. Then there's obviously Rob Brown, Ashanti, Channing Tatum, the guy that plays Timo Cruz has been in a bunch of stuff, obviously Samuel L. Jackson. So I mean there there was some there was some young young talent and things like that there. One of my wife's favorite sports movies, one of her favorite favorites. I don't know if I necessarily agree with it being too overrated, but number four I think is a little too high on the list. So moving on to number three, 1989's Field of Dreams. Obviously, it's beloved by baseball fans. Kind of hits me at home because they they refer to Chisholm, Chisholm, Minnesota, for Doc Moonlight Graham. So I mean, I I know it moves slow and it's not it's not exactly a baseball movie, but it kind of is. But it's definitely a lot more nostalgic than entertaining it. It is a slow-moving movie, but it's definitely I think it is a little overrated, honestly. And I completely disagree with this next one, is 2000 Rem Rem Remember the Titans. Obviously, a fan favorite. Critics criticize the historical inaccuracies and how it simplified the storytelling of the movie. It is my favorite sports movie. It's it's a top, top two, top three sports movie for me personally. So I I disagree with this one. The phenomenally shot, the actors are phenomenal, the the storyline's amazing. I I think it gets across the era the movie is shot for. Obviously, they had to condense a bunch a bunch of stuff and they couldn't put everything in there because it is a Disney movie, remember? So I do I do disagree with that. Number number two with Remember the Titans is definitely not where I would have it. It would not even be on this list for overrated movies. And the number one overrated sports movie, according to Chat GPT, is 1985's Rocky IV. Now, entertaining, yes, you know, it's when he he fights the Russian, and it's it's a little overdramatized. It is accurate for the time, obviously, with the Cold War going on, and uh Russia versus or USSR versus US and all that kind of stuff. So it I think it kind of piggybacked on that a lot, and the Miracle, 1980 Miracle on Ice. So I mean it is one of the it is one of the more entertaining of the series, but like I said, it's more remembered for iconic moments and soundtrack than the story itself. I mean, obviously Apollo Creed dying in the movie. You got the trainer Tony screaming, throw the towel, throw the towel, throw the towel, and you know, the quote, if he dies, he dies. You know, and and you can quote that movie a lot too. So, you know, that that's the list according to Chat GPT of the 10 most overrated sports movies. Now, what do you guys think? Is Rudy inspirational or is it overrated? You know, which sports movie gets a pass because of nostalgia? Which movie is actually underrated? Rated and what's the greatest sports movie of all time, according to the fans, according to the Rough Bunker Gang. So definitely let me know what you guys think on that. I obviously I kind of put my little spin on it too. So I I just I really want to know what you guys are thinking on that. So it's definitely something that you can you can give me some feedback on. So

Dad Talk Coaching Versus Just Dad

SPEAKER_00

with the with the with my next segment, you know, the dad talk. What what's the funniest thing your kid has ever said during a sports game? Now I I off the top of my head, you know, my kids say some pretty dumb shit, they say some pretty funny shit. So it's it's definitely a question that I have for all dads, all dad coaches, you know, parent coaches, things like that. And then there's you know, there's an entity to that, you know, dad talk. I do talk a lot about the coaching aspect and and being a dad. So I mean, kids discovering their favorite sports, like it can happen early, it can happen a little later than wanted to, you know. My daughters, my daughters love basketball. My two, especially my two older daughters, they they do love basketball. So it's definitely something that I'm proud of that I get to have the opportunity to coach both of them. I think my oldest daughter found out that she loved basketball at an earlier age, kind of the fifth, sixth grade area, kind of because we were we won a lot and she's with her friends and we got to travel. She she loved that kind of stuff. My middle daughter, you know, I think it came a little later when she got to play with more of her friends, and she got to kind of have me more as a coach, which was which was fun for her. I mean, and then my youngest daughter, you know, she loves she loves to skate, and she's loved skating for years now, and she's battling whether she wants to skate or play basketball. And I and I kind of I kind of take a backseat to it because I I want her to figure it out. I don't want to push her in any certain way, I don't want to push her uh to what I would want her to do. I just I want her to have fun, I want her to be able to do it and to enjoy it. And you know, my son, though I'm our oldest, our oldest child, he found out that he loved swimming later. After he had a knee injury in basketball, or he had got the knee injury in football, he didn't want to have the stress and stuff like that on his knees or knee in basketball, and he had a hard time telling me that he was switching to swimming, and uh, you know, obviously it it did it hurt. I wouldn't say I was hurt by it. I was I was kind of blown back and kind of surprised that he enjoyed it because he doesn't seem like the type of athlete to want to swim. Because swimming's a hard sport, swimming's a hard activity to do, like it takes a lot, it takes a lot of self-discipline, it takes a lot of mental discipline. You know, it's you have to embrace the suck, is kind of what his coach always said. And he he really, really enjoyed it, which is good, which is really good. And you know, with my youngest daughter for basketball, you know, it's you know, coaching versus just being a dad. I I get to just be a dad in that aspect. I get to sit on the sideline and and watch her play and enjoy watching her play. And I I do love that. And I I I don't know if I would enjoy it as much with my older ones because I have put a lot of work and time and effort and things like that into them and their team and the program and stuff like that for that age group. Like it'd be really hard for me to separate coaching from just being a dad. And I'm just being honest on that. I I really think I would struggle with it. Not that I was I would contradict what their coach does, says, or has them do, just you know, keeping my my mouth shut to the aspect of, you know, they would be looking at me and I would just have to keep telling them, you know, just play, you know, uh, and just being a dad and the aspect of that, I I think I'm excited and nervous for for my youngest one because she always seems to look at me to help her figure it out, and I want her to figure it out with a coach and with a different person in mind.

Mailbag Questions For The Listeners

SPEAKER_00

So I'm just gonna kind of finish it up here, go through the rough bunk bunker mailbag. I want you guys to send me some stuff or you know, interact a little bit if you would. What's your favorite sports memory growing up? You know, I I have a lot of them, but I I I think the biggest thing for me, and I talked to a a friend recently, you know, it w it for me it was just going to the baseball field with no plan of anything but just playing and having a good time and hanging out with your buddies and doing all that kind of stuff, like just going to the baseball field and figuring it out. And it was so much fun. It was so much fun, and I I I miss that kind of stuff. I miss seeing that kind of stuff. So that that'd be my favorite sports memory growing up. Another one, what what's your what's the best stadium you've ever visited? So let me know what you say on that. Let me give me your invo give me your opinion on that. Last one for that. Give me your dream force them in golf. You and three other guys. You and three other players. Dream force them. I don't know who I would pick, obviously I'm pretty new to the sport. Just off the top of my melon. I think for me if I could pick three other guys to go golf with, one of them would be Charles Barclay. Just for the simple fact of he likes to talk and brag and talk shit and all that kind of stuff, I think he'd be a lot of fun to golf with. Steph Curry. Cause he's good and I I'd just I'd love to pick his brain on things. And I think my last one would be Tom Brady. And I don't think I have to explain anything on that. So definitely let me uh let me close the show here with some final thoughts and some some predictions and some things like that. Final

The one thing I'm looking forward to watching, honestly, is the the last couple games of the World Cup. I really am really interested to see what happens and what unfolds there with Spain and France. It's gonna be a really good game. And then England and Argentina, Lionel Messi's having a hell of a World Cup again. So that's definitely something I'm looking forward to watching. And then I'll give a recommendation for a movie show podcaster book here. Obviously, I don't read much, I'm not much of a reader, but for movie, I'm gonna suggest or recommend Sicario. Sicario with Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin. Just watch it. Really good. For a show, I'm gonna suggest Seal Team. It's on Amazon Prime and Paramount Plus podcast. I'm just gonna suggest Rough Bunker Sports Podcast or Boss Two Boys. The other one that I'll suggest, obviously, something that I listen to, I wouldn't say on a regular basis, but definitely something that I listen to every once in a while is hoopin' and hollering with Jason Williams.
